Why businesses look up a domain
A domain’s registration decides whether your website and email keep working. It also tells you who you’re dealing with.
Don’t let a domain expire
An expired domain takes your website and email with it. See the expiry date in seconds, and who to renew with.
Check it can’t be taken
A transfer lock stops anyone moving your domain to another company without your say. We show whether yours is on.
Find out who’s behind a site
A suspicious email or a lookalike domain? See when it was registered, who with, and where to report abuse.
What every look-up covers
Free for everyone, with no account needed. Straight from the registry, using RDAP where it has it and classic Whois where it doesn’t.
Registrar
Who the domain is registered with, with a link to their website so you know where to log in and renew.
Dates
When it was first registered, when it was last changed and when it expires, with the days left.
Transfer lock and status
Whether it’s locked against transfers, and every status code the registry keeps, in plain English.
Nameservers and DNSSEC
Which nameservers run the domain’s DNS, and whether DNSSEC is switched on at the registry.
Owner and abuse contact
The owner where the registry shows it (most hide it for privacy), and the registrar’s abuse contact.
The raw record
The record exactly as the registry sent it, for when you need every detail.
Almost every domain ending
Every generic ending, such as .com, .shop and .app, and most country endings, including .uk, .io, .co, .ai and .de.
Private
We don’t keep the domains you look up. We only count how many look-ups there are, to stop misuse.
An API for your own systems
On a KT8 Tools plan, look domains up from your own systems with an API key.
Checking a domain properly?
The registration is one part. Pair your look-up with these:
DNS checker
Every record the domain needs for its website and email, checked, with the fix for anything wrong.
Check the DNSMy domains
Renewal reminders, and an alert if the transfer lock comes off or the registrar changes.
Watch your domainsIP checker
Who holds the server behind the domain, and whether it’s on an email blocklist.
Look up an addressQuestions
Is the Whois lookup free?
Yes. Anyone can run 50 look-ups a day with no account. Signed in, your plan’s daily limit applies (1,000 a day on a 14-day trial or Solo, more on bigger plans), and Business plans and above can use the API.
Why is the owner’s name hidden?
Since 2018, most registries and registrars hide the owner’s name, address and email to protect their privacy. Companies sometimes choose to show theirs. To contact an owner, the registrar can usually pass a message on.
Which domain endings can you look up?
Every generic ending (.com, .net, .org, .shop, .app and over 1,000 more) and most country endings, including .uk, .io, .co, .ai and .de. A few registries, such as .es, don’t publish Whois at all; we’ll say so and link to their own search.
What does “locked against transfers” mean?
The domain can’t be moved to another registrar until the owner unlocks it. It should be on for any domain you rely on. Turn it off only while you move the domain, and back on afterwards.
The domain isn’t registered. Can I buy it here?
We don’t sell domains. Any registrar can register a free name for you.
Do you keep the domains I look up?
No. We count how many look-ups there are to stop misuse, but we don’t keep which domains were looked up.
